ostrich and Swartberg Pass

Writer's picture: ToldiToldi

Fortunately, it cleared up a bit and Toldi said: "now or never to the Cape"

That worked out well. Our destination today is Oudtshoorn, further inland. There are large ostrich farms here, we want to visit one and then cross the Swartberg Pass. It's not that high but is supposed to be very beautiful.

Before we go to the ostriches, Soraya (in the foreground) prepares us a fantastic dinner with a crowning finale:

The next morning we go to an ostrich farm. During the tour we are told that around 2 million ostriches are bred in the region every year.

We see the whole process from egg to for the adult animal . By the way, you can stand on an ostrich egg! You have to, because an ostrich that sits on it to brood weighs 100 kilos.

It's great how the animals can move their heads in all directions.

The road over the Swartberg Pass was opened in 1888. Built by around 280 prisoners together with the brilliant engineer Thomas Bain. All retaining walls are dry stone walls and have lasted for almost 150 years. A great achievement.

The pass road itself offers phenomenal insights into the history of the earth, how the rock masses were folded millions of years ago and how the road winds through legendary gorges. How amazing and abstract an engineer must be able to think to see a road there.

Finally we landed in George, a city by the ocean. We will spend the night here.
