Off to Botswana

Writer's picture: ToldiToldi

After 2 very nice days in the Makalali Game Reserve, we set off towards Botswana. It is March 1, 2024 and we only have about three and a half weeks left to get back to Windhoek.

It was beautiful here and many animals showed themselves.

Blue Wildbeest

hippos

and many others,

The route now goes via Polokwane, which was formerly called Pietersburg and was the first city to be renamed after the fall of the apartheid regime.

In 2010, matches of the FIFA World Cup were played in Polokwane.

Our route plan for the next few days

On the way here to the border we drive kilometer after kilometer through beautiful subtropical landscape

past banana groves

Travelers we met gave us the tip to use the small border crossing in Stockpoort, as the main crossing is constantly overloaded with trucks.

On the way to Stockpoort

After crossing the border into Botswana

over a narrow little bridge

and the border river Limpopo, we are given a friendly welcome. In Botswana, cattle breeding is an important topic and the number of cattle a family owns

is part of their reputation.

At the entrance to the dry Kalahari, the cattle stir up a huge amount of dust.

We spend the night in Rakops on a campsite,

make a fire and put something on the grill.

We decide to visit the Central Kalahari the next morning.

We are not quite aware of what 80 kilometers

Deep sand track. As far as 80

It's kilometers to the entrance. Only 4x4 vehicles with at least 160 HP are allowed! No problem for Mr. Leo. So let's get going.

You should remember that you have to walk the 80 kilometers back again.

Thero the ranger explains everything to us, that in the park, which is three times the size of Switzerland, all paths are well signposted. The reality is... nothing is signposted 😂

Luckily, Toldi and my co-driver are good navigators and thanks to Maps Me offline we found our way out again.

Summary of the 2-day journey into solitude:

Saw very few animals. (Unfortunately) Pure adventure, navigation, getting through rough terrain. Spent the night with wild animals without a fence.

bucket shower

But you have to bring water with you and fill it up 😂😂😂 and what else......

2 days without a cell phone 👍 a whole new experience.

We will discuss where we are going tomorrow tonight
